How to Select an Insurance Plan

The best way to pick an insurance policy is to match it to how long you will be gone, what you intend the insurance to be used for and whether or not you need coverage inside the USA.

Will you need coverage inside the USA?

There are several options for insurance inside the USA. Some of them are time restrictive, no more than 3 months, no more than 6 months, and others offer the visitor a full year of coverage inside the USA. If you are a US citizen it is equally complicated. None of the plans are ACA/Obamacare accredited, that means that you would pay the fine for “not having insurance” if you were inside the US for more than 30 days. If you are outside the USA for over 335 days then no fine applies. There are plans that will cover you if you come and go to the US for business or pleasure.

Are you a student, grad student, postdoc, teacher or professor?

Students are available for special plans, and these plans have some benefits. They tend to be cheaper because they are insuring a younger group of people, they often give discounts for using the student health center, they meet the requirements for a student visa. Some of them will even provide coverage if you should happen to get pregnant while here. Some of the plans are good for a year, others only for a 9 month school year, but can then be extended if you stay on. These plans are available to US students going abroad as well as foreign students coming here. If you have a student group coming to your school to study, or going abroad we can insure them too under a group policy.

Do you need to insure the cost of a trip or cruise?

Families save all year for a vacation, then they buy a cruise ticket, airline tickets or get tour packages to have amazing adventures. What if “little joey” breaks a leg two weeks before you leave? What if you are in a car wreck on the way to the airport? What if a loved one becomes ill and you have to cancel your trip? You shouldn’t lose your hard earned money that you have paid out for the vacation of a lifetime. With trip insurance the cost of your trip is covered if you can’t go, or if it gets interrupted and you have to come home unexpectedly. These trips call for a specific type of short term policy.

Are you traveling in a group?

Group travel can be fun and exciting. Often times kids go in groups with school or church. Lots of travel companies now offer group travel. We can insure your group anywhere in the world. Check out the group missionary pages and youth group pages to see what is available. Group plans are unique in that they offer all members the same benefits regardless of health history. Group rates can also be cheaper than policies purchased individually and it is a great way to protect the assets of your church or company when taking people overseas, especially minors. Sometimes people buy insurance to supplement what a tour group is offering, if that is the case the individual short term policies will better fit your needs.
